1. How long does it take to house train a puppy?. If done well your
pup should be trained in 3 weeks. Many have got it down in one week.
2. Should I get a yellow lab so I can see ticks better. Ticks move down
through the fur fast and nymphs carry 80 % of lymes and they are the
size of a poppy seed. Get any color you would like and take preventions
to prevent lymes.
3. How much do I feed my puppy ? Give what the seller advises and
what is on the directions on the feed bag. Always feed the dog and not
the pan. Increase more if a lot of exercise and cut back when needed on
times of less activity.
4. How long do Labradors live ? 10-12 years average and many years
longer if kept leaner and conditioned.
5.When should I start training my puppy ? The 2nd day after bringing
your pet to your home. Add one new command each week and review all
commands often . Start out with like 10 minutes a day two times a day
for young pups and reward often with praise and food rewards t that
you will cut back on later on.
6. If I have another dog that is not wanting to be around the new puppy
what do I do ?. Ignore your older dog and give it praise and acceptance
in and along with holding your pup y.
7. How long will it take for my puppy to sleep all night ? It will take
between days to a week or more. Remove the water 2 hours before
bed time and take the pup out to potty just before you go to sleep. As
the pup gets older it will be able to go longer between potty times.
8. How do I stop my puppy from chewing on things ? Give the pup
things it can chew on like a hard kong toy and teach the pup to obey the
word no.
9. How do I get my puppy to stop bitting ? Yipe louldly when it bites
and walk away. The pup who craves your love will learn that behavior
stops your affection , it works be consistant and keep at it.
10.When should I get my dog spayed or neuterd ? Have it done about 6
and a half months, it does not stunt growth if done before the dog is fully
grown.
11. When should I get a rabbies shot for my pup ? Three weeks after
the last vaccination done at 12 weeks of age. Check with your health
dept as you may be able to go to a free rabbies clinic in your county.
12. Which has a better temparament a male or female ? Each dog is an
individual. The temparament is genetic and very much molded by how
the pup is treated and raised. Both sexes make great pets.
13. How can I keep my dog in the best of health .? Protect your pets
from autos and lymes disease their two greatest threats. Exercise your
pet and keep the wt on the lean side and feed a quality food. Go to your
vet at least once a year for a good check up .
14. What is the difference between a English and American labrador ?
Both came from one , then the stocker broader blocker headed ones
were line bred to produce the type of English Labradors or show line
labradors. What is know of American labradors is that they are longer
legged, longer snouted and taller.
15. Are chocolate labradors more hyper ? In some cases becuause
they were in high demand when they became available they were not
bred often carefully. I have seen very smart calm chocolate labradors
and others that were nuts. I have seen this in blacks and yellows also. It
pays to meet the parents and breeder of a lab puppy.
16. How do I train my puppy ? Get books on training and rent videos
and a puppy class is great. It is fun to train and not hard but one must
be consistant and the rewards are very worth it.
17. What about the raw food diet ? If you want to do it go for it just
make sure the diet is broad based enough to give all needed nutrients.
It is expensive and a lot more work but if you do it right the dog will do
fine.
18. Is bagged dog food good enough ? I use Purina one and my dogs
are healthy. The company is American and makes quality broad based
food using American products in their food.
19. Will labradors get along with cats ? They do , introduce them early
on.
